Why this, why now?

Do we really need another blog and who will read this?

I must confess that I am a copycat. Prof. Aswath Damodaran writes about his Musings on Market and discusses corporate finance and valuation with emphasis on business valuation.

I thought, why not a blog on intellectual property (IP) valuation? We are a couple of CPVA-qualified (Certified Patent Valuation Analysts), and while one of us has a steady finance background, I flit from career to career every decade like a nerdy butterfly on drugs.

I have been obsessed with IP since 2000 and IP valuation, especially patent valuation, since 2006. Every year that passed by, I think the madness would subside, but it only got to a point where I got my Ph.D. in patent valuation.

I am also a serial blogger- I have 1 blog since 2006 and have intermittently started and abandoned several blogs. I have a feeling about this one. A good feeling.

I want to share with you the nuances of IP, the different kinds of IP and, the vagaries of the existing valuation methods as applied to them. Occasionally, we will value existing patent portfolios of listed companies as an exercise.

IP is a different beast in that it has technical, legal and, business facets, making it complex and interesting to value and comment on. We hope to share our experiences with you and invite you to send us your questions in this field to keep the conversation going.
